D.C.'s Different Drummer's
Songs for Life - World AIDS Day Concert
This coming December 1, 2008, in honor of World AIDS day, DCDD will further this mission of giving back by performing the inaugural Songs for Life concert. Our concert will be held at 8:00 pm Monday December 1st at the Harman Center for the Arts, 610 F Street, NW (Gallery Place Metro). Tickets must be purchased directly from the Harman Center Box Office. With this important fund raising event, we hope to raise the city’s profile as a participant—if not a leader—in global efforts to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, and to procure much-needed funds for three outstanding local organizations to continue their work: Whitman-Walker Clinic, Us Helping Us, and Metro TeenAIDS. As members of the Washington, DC, community, it is impossible to ignore the staggering toll HIV/AIDS has wrought on the city. With this concert we strive to increase awareness about the continuing impact of HIV/AIDS on the District and in the LGBTQ community by honoring these organizations and their excellent work. The Concert will feature the Capitol Pride Symphonic Band under the direction of Joe Bello and DC Swing!, directed by Chris Raitzyk. DCDD Clarinet Quartet La Reeda Loca will perform prior to the concert at a VIP reception. The concert will benefit Whitman-Walker Clinic, Us Helping Us, and Metro Teen AIDS. The program will include Sousa's The Thunderer, Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Hymn to the Fallen by John Williams from the film Saving Private Ryan, Shenandoah and Second Suite in F by Gustav Holst. Featured in the program will be flute soloist David Lonkevich playing Concertino for Flute solo and band by Chaminade and vocal soloist Steven Wilson singing You Raise Me Up. The DC Swing! performance will include Bye Bye Blackbird, When You Wish Upon a Star and the classic tune Jump, Jive and Wail. The group will also play Bring on the Rain sung by the composer, William Knight. There are many ways you can help us raise funds for our three designated charities. You can make a donation and be recognized as a sponsor of the event and can get you and your friends to attend the concert. We encourage you to please direct any questions you have to RGI events & public relations, at 703.708.5008 or Songsforlife@dcdd.org We look forward to seeing you December 1st.
