Why a lesbian and gay band?
First, we hope that our efforts can enrich the community both culturally and emotionally. We hope our presence can encourage others to become active and proud participants in the community. With our performances we are providing an atmosphere where lesbians and gays need not be hidden. Also, because the band includes men, women, blacks, whites and browns, we are truly a melting pot of the Gay community. Thus, the band provides a forum where the Gay community can talk, listen, and understand more about each other. Lastly, although there is a lot of hard work involved, nothing is as rewarding or satisfying as a well prepared performance; be it in a concert hall or on the street. Working and growing together is just plain fun!!
What if I don't play an instrument?
There is plenty of room for non-musicians in D.C.'s Different Drummers. Our summer session includes a flag corps, banner carriers, and a color guard. Each marching season we audition baton twirlers, a drum major, and a flag corps captain. We always need water carriers to assist us in parades. During the winter months we are in need of creative individuals to help with concerts, socials, promotions, and fund raising.
Do I have to be gay to join?
While D.C.'s Different Drummers is predominantly gay and lesbian, we welcome anyone who supports musical growth in an open, diverse environment. Because we have both glbt and non-glbt members, our musical statement is more powerful. WE ARE ALL TOGETHER TO MAKE MUSIC...regardless of our sexuality. We band together to show that people of different sexes, creeds, colors, ages, and sexualities can unite around a common goal.
How can I join D.C.'s Different Drummers?
Since there are no auditions, all you need to do is show up for our regular weekly rehearsals. Check the calendar for times, location and contact information regarding our rehearsals, or you can contact our Membership Director by email here.
