A Message from the President

Thank you for visiting our website to learn more about D.C.'s Different Drummers. It is my pleasure to serve this fine organization of musicians who comprise the only community band serving the Nation's Capital.
The band was born in 1981, and has been a safe haven for GLBT and straight musicians in DC, MD and VA since then. We've grown significantly in the past 32 years, yet our core values remain the same... To make music and have fun!
D.C.'s Different Drummers began as a marching band and social group. Our performing groups have grown over the years to include the DCDD Marching Band, the Capitol Pride Symphonic Band, Capitol Pride Winds, DC Swing!, several smaller ensembles and our newest group we refer to as Project Light Bulb. Each has it's own unique musical flavor, and we invite you to learn about each facet of the DCDD. Whether you are coming to us as a musician seeking a place to express your talents, a member of our audience, a donor looking to make a contribution or a volunteer who'd like to give your time to a worthy cause, there is something for everyone within our bands. For more information about our groups, click here.
The new season has begun, and we have amazing performances planned. Our Capitol Pride Symphonic Band will take the stage at the Maryland Music Educators Association Conference on February 23, 2013. We recently hired a new director for DC Swing! - Matt Leonhardt - with tremendous drive an enthusiasm to take us to new heights. Our Marching Band continues to grow and entertain hundreds of thousands of cheering people as we take to the streets for pride festivals and holiday parades. We have seen great success within our organization, and we continue to give music back to the community. It is our passion. It is what moves us.
I personally would like to invite you to join us this year for a concert, for a parade, for a fundraising event. Tell your friends about us. Spread the word about the band. Join our newsletter and learn how you can be a supporter of the band. If you would like to get involved, and have any questions or comments, please email me at president@dcdd.org. And if you would like to hear from our membership director and join one of ensembles, please complete our contact form.
I always look forward to meeting new members, fans, friends and family of the band. Please do say Hi when you attend one of our events. And, if you haven't already done so, please "like" us on Facebook!
Warmest regards,
Matt Swearman
President, DCDD
