Our Ensembles
Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is DCDD’s largest ensemble, and features all instruments from the classic concert band. They pride themselves on the variety of music they play, from classical to modern compositions, across many genres. The Symphonic Band welcome all musical skill-sets, and feature musicians from a number of backgrounds, from virtuosos to enthusiastic recreational players. With the span of musical selections they play, this is an excellent ensemble for members to develop their musical skills and exposure.
Marching Band
The DCDD Marching Band is the organization’s first established and most visible ensemble. The group encompasses marching woodwinds, brass, percussion, along with a traditional color guard. DCDD Marching Band performs annually in the Washington D.C.’s Capital Pride Parade and Pride Festival along with numerous other East Coast Pride engagements including Boston, New York, and many more. They also partner with TeamDC and perform annually through the summer “Night Out” series at DC United soccer games and the Nationals baseball games.
Jazz Band
The DCDD Jazz Band performs at numerous venues and events in the DC metropolitan region, including at the Capital Hill Arts Workshop, DC’s Capital Pride Festival, U Street’s Twins Jazz, Eastern Market’s Mr. Henry’s, and Old Town Alexandria’s Torpedo Factory, and more. They play at DCDD’s annual holiday concert, held in conjunction with the Symphonic Band. The DCDD Jazz Band is also available for hire at private events.
Color Guard
DCDD’s Guard performs across two seasons- alongside marching band in the summer and separately during the Winter as an Independent Senior/World Winter Guard. The guard spins flag, rifle, sabre, airblade, and baton, welcoming all skill levels. Their focus is having fun doing what they love – although a trophy or two is nice also!
2nd Independence
2nd Independence is a small jazz combo group that plays standards with a high emphasis on improvisation. They meet weekly for jam sessions, and to rehearse for upcoming performances. 2nd Independence is available for hire, and play at private parties, banquets, and conferences, as well as at public parks and community events such as Adams Morgan PorchFest. All members are invited to participate, though those who are new to improvising may find it challenging.
Small Ensembles
Need a smaller group to perform? DC’s Different Drummers also host several small ensembles available for your private functions, holy unions, banquets or anytime you want to fabulize your event with live music. Our small ensembles include but are not limited to a brass quintet, saxophone quintet, clarinet quartet, woodwind quintet and more.
