2nd Independence is a flexible, combo style jazz group that plays styles ranging from jazz standards to lead-sheet arrangements of contemporary hits, placing a high emphasis on improvisation. 2nd Independence is available for hire for public and private events. The group has performed at venues across the DC metro area such as The Library of Congress, Smithsonian’s American Art Museum, Adam’s Morgan PorchFest, The National Theater, The Ritz-Carlton, and more!
Do you have a special event coming up?
A live band may be just the thing you need, and 2nd Independence is available for hire! The musicians in 2nd Independence have experience performing at a wide variety of events in the DC Metro area. Combo instrumentaiton and music selections are flexible depending on your needs. As an added bonus DC’s Different Drummers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so hiring the combo play at your event may be tax deductible!
History
2nd Independence was formed as a sub-group of the DCDD Jazz Band by members who wanted to focus more on traditional jazz methods, like playing by ear and improvised solos. The original combo members met for rehearsal at the corner of 2nd Street and Independence Ave, leading to the name ” 2nd Independence.”

Participation
While 2nd Independence primarily draws membership from the DCDD Jazz Band, members of all DCDD ensembles are invited to participate! With a high emphasis placed on improvisation, playing from memory, and following lead-sheet style charts, beginners may find it challenging. When not rehearsing for an upcoming gig, 2nd Independence holds jam-session style, casual rehersals. These are meant to be a highly flexible, welcoming enviroment for devloping and honing improvisation skills. 2nd Independence typically rehearses in Rockville, MD once a week leading up to gigs, but scheduling and rehearsal location may vary depending on member’s availability.
