About Jazz Band
DCDD’s Jazz Band is a big band-style ensemble, complete with horns and a full rhythm section. The Jazz Band has performed at numerous venues and events in the DC metro area, including the DC Public Library, the Smithsonian American Arts Museum, Adams Morgans PorchFest, and DC’s Capital Pride Festival, to name a few. Annual performances for the jazz band include an early spring concert, Pride month concert, fall concert, and winter holiday concert held in conjunction with the Symphonic Band. DCDD’s smaller jazz combo group 2nd Independence draws much of its membership from the jazz band, and is available for hire at public and private events.
Travis Gettinger, Director
Travis Gettinger is a composer, arranger, performer, and educator currently residing in Montgomery County, Maryland. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College. Travis has been teaching marching percussion and drum set for over 15 years, both privately and in group settings.
He has written orignal compositions and arrangements of popular tunes for a variety of musical ensembles, including pieces for DCDD’s Marching and Jazz Bands. In addition to teaching and arranging, Travis regularly performs across the DC metropolitan area, playing with cover bands, jazz combos, and classical groups as a multi-instrumentalist on percussion, piano, clarinet, and bass clarinet.
Travis joined DCDD as a member in spring of 2017, playing with DCDD’s Marching, Symphonic, and Jazz Bands. Before becoming the Jazz Band’s Artistic Director in 2022, Travis played drum set and auxiliary percussion with the ensemble.
Joseph Nicol, Assistant Director
Joe Nicol (he/him) has been a member of DCDD since 2021. His primary instrument is alto saxophone, which he has been playing since the age of 9.
Since joining DCDD, he has played alto sax in both DCDD Marching Band and Jazz Band. He also enjoys playing with 2nd Independence, DCDD’s small jazz combo group.
He has written a number of arrangements, many of which have been performed by both the Jazz Band and 2nd Independence. He currently lives in Washington, DC.
